Almost 20,000 individuals declared bankrupt in last quarter of 2008

Almost 20,000 people were declared bankrupt in England and Wales during the fourth quarter of 2008 - an increase of 22.2% compared to the same period in 2007.

There were 19,100 individuals made bankrupt during October, November and December of last year according to The Insolvency Service. A further 10,344 people entered into Individual Voluntary Arrangements (IVAs), bringing the total of individual insolvencies in England and Wales in the fourth quarter of 2008 to and 29,444.


The number of business being declared bankrupt rocketed during the same period. There were 4,607 compulsory liquidations and creditors' voluntary liquidations in total in England and Wales in the fourth quarter of 2008 - up 51.6% on the same period a year ago.
