How to obtain a copy of your credit rating file from credit reference agencies

There are a number of companies in the UK who compile data about you and then provide credit ratings to banks and other lenders as to your credit worthiness.

You are entitled to know what information is being kept about you and to have any errors on your credit reference report corrected.

Equifax are offering you free access to your credit report file online for 30 days without obligation.

And Credit Expert, part of Experian, are also offering you free access to your credit report online. For full details visit Credit Expert's website. Experian is the UK's largest credit agency.

Alternatively you can request a copy by post.

Each agency will have its own records and to get a complete picture of the information being held about you, you would need to write to all three credit rating agencies.

To obtaining a copy of your credit rating file from a credit reference agency, write to them with the following information:

your full name

your current address

any other addresses you have lived at in the past six years

You will also need to enclose a cheque or postal order for £2 made payable to the credit reference agency you are writing to.
