Personal bankruptcy figures down 5% year on year

There were 26,072 individual insolvencies in England and Wales in the third quarter of 2007 on a seasonally adjusted basis according to the Insolvency Service.

This was a decrease of 3.0% on the second quarter of 2007 and a decrease of 5.0% on the same period a year ago - the first such year on year fall for five years.

There were a total of 15,833 bankruptcies during the three months, July to September 2007, a decrease of 2.1% on the previous quarter, but an increase of 2.2% on the corresponding quarter in 2006.

10,239 Individual Voluntary Arrangements (IVAs) were also made, a decrease of 4.3% on the previous quarter and a decrease of 14.3% on the corresponding quarter of the previous year.
